Most school uniforms are made from polyester, a synthetic fiber derived from petroleum. In other words, plastic. For a garment a child wears six to ten hours a day, that single fact deserves more attention than it usually gets.
Children spend approximately 27,000 hours in their school uniform between Pre-K and graduation. That makes the uniform one of the most consistent physical inputs in a child's daily life — more constant than almost anything else they touch. And until now, parents have had no real choice in the matter.
Why the material matters
To produce any synthetic fabric, raw materials go through an intense chemical process. That process leaves residues. Those residues can include PFAS, hormone disruptors, and other compounds that have no place against a child's skin. We are also the first generation to have worn this much plastic, and research is only beginning to reveal what that means for our bodies. Our children's generation is growing up with even more of it.
What a child wears against their skin for most of their young life is not a minor detail. Material choice is a daily, repeated exposure — and it is one of the few exposures a family can actually control.
The chemistry most labels never mention
Synthetic textiles often undergo multiple chemical treatments for performance and appearance. These can include:
- Formaldehyde resins for wrinkle resistance — classified by the WHO as a probable carcinogen.
- Azo dyes, some of which can break down into carcinogenic aromatic amines.
- PFAS for stain and water resistance — the "forever chemicals" known for environmental persistence.
- Flame retardants including PBDEs.
- Phthalates in printing inks and coatings.
What matters is not the existence of any single chemical in isolation, but how often and how long a child is exposed through daily wear. Uniforms are among the most consistent exposure sources in a childhood.
What the research has found
A 2022 study analyzed 72 children's textiles marketed with stain-resistant features. PFAS were confirmed in every item selected for targeted analysis — and school uniforms showed the highest concentrations among all children's textile categories tested.
It is not limited to treated garments, either. A 2025 study applied non-targeted chemical screening to 43 infant garments with no specialty treatments and still identified 303 distinct chemical features, including plasticizers, UV stabilizers, flame retardants, and preservatives. This is precisely why certification matters even for uniforms that make no performance claims.
There are better alternatives to synthetic school uniforms. Fabrics that do not shed microplastics. Materials that do not trap heat or carry chemical treatments against growing skin.
The alternative we built on
Positive Thread is built on GOTS-certified organic cotton and TENCEL lyocell, independently certified at every stage. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or GMO seeds. TENCEL is a plant-based fiber made from eucalyptus wood pulp in a closed-loop process. Neither sheds microplastics. Both biodegrade.
None of this requires a parent to become a textile scientist. It simply requires that someone, somewhere, decided to disclose what is in the garment and certify it — which is the standard we built to.
